About

Clinical Practice
I am a dual-accredited Consultant in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. My practice involves clinical advice on complex infections, interpretation of microbiological investigations and a specialist clinic for tuberculosis (TB) and non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease. I also provide infection control advice and lead the Northern Ireland Mycobacterial Reference Laboratory.
Academic and Research Background
I hold a PhD in Medical Microbiology from Queen's University Belfast and completed a research fellowship at Colorado State University (USA) in laboratory models of respiratory infection. I am an Honorary Lecturer in Medical Microbiology at Queen's University Belfast. While I practise across the breadth of clinical microbiology, my principal research interests are TB and NTM infections. My research spans regional epidemiology, laboratory modelling of host-pathogen interactions and clinical trials of new diagnostic tests.
Expert Witness Approach
My opinions integrate the clinical history, microbiological findings, epidemiological setting, published scientific evidence and accepted professional standards to provide independent opinions on causation, injury and standards of care in infectious disease.
I understand my overriding duty to the Court and provide objective, impartial opinions within my area of expertise.
